KC March Easter Hockey Festival 2012 - Hockey Reigned! (Rained?)

It was Cape Town's turn to host the only SAHA-sanctioned National Club Tournament which has been circulating to key hockey centres annually since 1997. Central Hockey Club was endorsed by Western Province Hockey Club to serve as hosts which was last seen in Cape Town in 2007. And, what a wet and wonderful weekend of hockey was had by all!

31 teams representing 19 clubs from around the country participated.   As always, competition in the Premier Men and Ladies Divisions was intense, producing hockey of a high standard. United (East London), 2011 Premier Men's title holders, retained their crown -- this after coming close to being eliminated in the pool stages.  Form horses, Central, unbeaten until the final, faltered at the last hurdle.  Gelvan Tornados (Port Elizabeth) proved to be worthy winners of the Ladies Premier Division, getting the better of arch rivals Parkside (East London).  The Challenge Divisions were keenly contested.  The Men’s Challenge Division was taken by an Invitation Team comprised of a fair sprinkling of the legendary  Central Class of ’99 WP League Winners (Bruce Jacobs, Marvin Bam, Neil Davids, Henrico Murphy, etc)  -- just too much experience for a game St Patricks College (Kimberley).  The Ladies Challenge was taken by St Peter’s (Port Elizabeth) who put in several spirited performances during this Festival – on and off the field.  Foul Cape Town weather over three days presented many challenges  for the organizers and participants.  But, at the end of the day, all proved up to the challenge.  Once again, hockey was the winner!   The  KCM Festival now moves to Kimberley for the first time – roll on 2013!
